How Lawn Tractors Work: Hardcore Machinery For Green Thumbs

By Michael Bryksa

Back in the old days, when people think about working the lawn, they think about trowels and gardening shears. It was all they hadand all that was availablefor working in their front lawn or garden. Imagine cutting the grass on your front lawn every week with nothing but a giant pair of scissors!

And then somebody came along, decided to put two and two together, and invented the lawn tractor. He thought, If they have tractors in construction, why cant we have it on our front lawn? That idea made the lives of everyone whos ever had to work on their front lawn much easier. It eased a lot of back pain troubles, too.

The lawn tractor is indeed heaven-sent.

A lawn tractor is a machine used to cut grass on front lawn and other tracts of land at an even length, such as gardens, parks, golf courses, etc. It uses revolving blades to perform the job.

It should be noted that the lawn tractor is the evolution of the lawn mower. Fact is the lawn mower came out first, intended to trim grass to the same height. But eventually as more people began working on larger open spaces, the simple lawn mower no longer seems to cut it. They needed a bigger piece of machinery the operator could ride while the mower does its job. So the lawn mower was brought back in the drawing board and became the lawn tractor. Lawn mowers are still available and in use today.

Lawn tractors are built to employ one of the two types of rotating mechanisms: the rotary mower and the reel or cylinder mower.

Cylinder or Reel Mowers

Before there were rotary mowers, there was first the cylinder mower. The first lawn mower was invented in 1827 by Edwin Budding, and it operated using the cylinder mower. The cylinder or reel mower is distinguished by the horizontal fixed blade where each blade is positioned around the reel axis forming a helix. The blade spins and makes the cut at the desired height.

In the lawn tractor industry it is widely known that the cylinder mower provides the cleanest cut of grass. The cutting action of the cylinder mower is similar to a pair of scissors through paper, and it allows the grass to heal and grow more quickly.

Rotary Mowers

The rotary mower didn’t see the light of day until much later, around the 1920s and 1930s, when people began experimenting with cutting mechanisms different from the cylinder mower. In 1952 the Victa company finally unveiled a commercial product that used the rotary mower. The mower was more lightweight and easier to use than the other models that came before it. From here on out the rotary motor grew in popularity to rival the cylinder mower type of cutting mechanism.

Lawn tractors these days costs as low as $1,500 USD to as high as $4,000 USD, give or take a few hundred. The price is pretty steep on the wallet, but take note lawn tractors with these price tags are top-tier and definitely some of the best lawn tractors the industry has to offer. If you work on a large patch of land on a daily basis, a top-quality lawn tractor is no doubt a worthy investment.

In fact, I’d go so far to say that it is a necessity.
