The Cunard Lines Queen Elizabeth which debuted on the 11th of October represents the second largest ship ever built in the companys history. The 92,400 tons vessel is capable of carrying a total of 2092 passengers.
The vessel, which was built at the Monfalcone shipyard near Trieste, has a very similar design to its sister ship the Queen Victoria.
The ship design offers a retro look characteristic of previous Cunard Queens vessels like the original Elizabeth launched in 1938. The vessel contains a range of different art exhibits, memorabilia and photos to pay homage to the tradition of the line. One of the most notable features of the ship is the Queens room. This room, a common feature in the rest of the Cunard vessels, plays host to a myriad of activities such diverse as fence lessons or white-glove tea. Without a shadow of a doubt the most eye catching element of this room is the Royal Standard presented to the original Queen Elizabeth by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother when she named the ship back in 1938.
In addition to the features characteristics of the Cunard tradition the Queen Elizabeth incorporates new features. Probably the most notorious addition is the Verandah restaurant. This fine dining venue, strongly focused on the French cuisine, offers a luxury dining experience at affordable prices.
In conclusion the vessel offers an interesting blend of historical and traditional features typical from the Cunard brand with the comfort and the attractions that you would expect from a newly built state of the art cruise.
Other features of the ship worth commenting are:
The Britannia Club concept was first pioneered on Queen Mary 2, gets its first stand-alone restaurant on Queen Elizabeth. It’s patterned after the Grill-style dining and means that the passengers who have the highest category of standard cabins will have their own restaurant.
Art Gallery Innovations: The art gallery onboard will have a special focus on shows that highlight specific artists.
Midships Bar: Situated on Deck 3, it is named after the original bar on the original Queen Elizabeth. It will pay tribute to the ship with 1930’s artwork and a piano for Ivor Novello .
Cunard Place, the space between the grand lobby and the Queens Room that, on Victoria, is a bit of a Cunard museum will still pay tribute to the line’s long time ties to royalty. But, the kiosk in the center — which disturbed the flow of passengers moving between areas — will not be there, so there’s more space.
In a delightful though minor addition to the Grills’ areas, passengers in the loftiest accommodations will have use of a strategically placed pair of telescopes that will provide literally a bird’s-eye view of ports, whether coming or going.
No Cunard ship is complete without a pub, and Queen Elizabeth will feature the Golden Lion Pub on Deck 2, serving up typical English food like fish and chips and shepherd’s pie
It is certain to appeal to both the experienced cruise travellers seeking to get a feel of the tradition of one the most iconic cruise lines and those looking to experience the glamour of a cruise holiday for the first time.
